Pescara, Italy 2009 – 30 000 spectators, 1 300 volunteer performers and 23 nations, celebrated the opening of the Mediterranean Games.
To begin with, a powerful sense of humanity was demonstrated by all the participants with a tribute dedicated to the victimes of the Aquila earthquake. The Ceremonies also honoured the values of sports using the traditional culture and iconography of the Italian region hosting the games: Abruzzo.
For the first time in the history of Mediterranean Games the “water ceremony” took place during the opening, this act became a leitmotive of this sport event and was reproduced in the next ceremonies.
